Alan Amos
Vice Chairman Alan Amos is senior chaplain at the Medway Maritime
Hospital, and a canon of
Rochester Cathedral. He began studying Arabic and Islam when he was a student
in London, and spent a year completing his studies in Beirut, Lebanon.
After a time working in London’s East End, he returned to Beirut where he worked as chaplain during the Lebanese civil war. He was awarded the OBE in 1979.
Since then he has taught inter faith studies in Cambridge, Canterbury and Rochester, at the same time preparing students for ordination in the ministry of the Christian churches.
He has been at the Medway Maritime for ten years,
and is responsible for the hospital chapel which on Fridays is used by
the Muslim members of hospital
staff for the Friday prayers.
He says about himself,
“ You have to have a sense of humour to
get by. Particularly to survive eight years working in a hospital!”
